Painting: My Passion

Painting: My Passion

"Painting is one of the most rewarding ways to artistically express yourself"

I am an hobby artist and I am very passionate about painting and idol making. I am not a professional painter but still I can manage with my paintings. In this blog I am going to show you some of my paintings that I have done in my free time.

Acrylic painting:

Acrylics differ from oil paints in that they have shorter drying times (as little as 10 minutes) and are soluble in water. One of the best things about acrylic is its versatility, and abstract painting provides the freedom to explore!. This is a small introduction to acrylic paint.

I often prefer acrylic paint because they dry faster on canvas/drawing paper than oil paints due to their polymer base which produces a kind of plastic layer once it dried. However, in some circumstances, the I may want the paint to stay moist for longer time, as I am a hobby painter. A trick to keep paints from drying out is to spray a light mist of water over them occasionally.

Acrylic Painting

Initially I have drawn a sketch for my painting of Lord Shiva. I have used grid method for this sketch. Then the next step that I did is to develop a thin coat of white primer. This helps to blend the subsequent colors effectively. Then I went on painting my sketch till I get the required flesh color. The one thing that I loved in acrylic painting is that one can have N-number of layers of colors. If we go for watercolor then after 3-4 coating, you will end up with a kind of muddy layer. So, I always love this acrylic paints. One more interesting thing is that acrylic paintings lasts longer than oil paintings. Oil paintings turns dim after few years but acrylic painting retains the same beauty for longer time. So, here is my end result of my painting.

Watercolor Painting:

As a hobby painter I have done some of the paintings. Watercolor is a best choice for those who are new to painting field. The advantage of the water color paint is that its slow drying nature which helps in blending the colors very easily. Also it is non-toxic in nature and of course no need of extra medium other than water to blend the color.

As a hobby painter I don't want to complete my paintings within a day, and I can't able to paint continuously for two and three hours. I usually prefer to take gap of couple of minutes after every half an hour or so. So, I prefer water color  as the brush are not hardened quickly which reduces my brush-maintenance problem.

Watercolor Painting
I have done many watercolor paintings but I do not have the pic of all those paintings. The above one is Lord Ganesha painting using watercolor paint. I have the habit of framing the paintings as I love paintings. For this painting also I have used OHP sheet for framing. If possible I will upload some of my watercolor paintings as soon as possible.

Pencil Sketch:

Pencil is the best choice for those who are new to the painting. As a beginner I have done some of the pencil sketches which includes the portrait sketch of celebrities, comics etc,. As I love making the mistakes, I prefer pencil sketch over pen sketch.

Here are some of my pencil sketches. First one is the sketch of my favorite actress 'Priety Zinta' special I have drawn this because of her cute face and lovely smile. Also I have drawn an hollywood actress. In this sketch I specially focused on the hair part. I spent more time in drawing her hair only. I tried my best to give a natural look for the hair.

Pencil Sketch of Celebrities
As I am not a professional artist I have used grids for reference to draw the these portrait pics. Also I have drawn some comic faces, in this blog I have uploaded only one of them i.e Manga face.

Pen Sketch:

I have done some of the sketches using ball pen. One of the advantage of using pen is to get more smooth sketch with nice outlines but the problem is with the shading part. This is a pen sketch of an Indian bride. As I told I am able to have smooth outline for my sketch but the shading part is not up to the mark.

Environment Friendly: Idol Making Process using Clay

Clay Idol Making Process:

When you ask Bhandari-Brothers from Karki, about the process involved in making the Ganesha idol, this the way they explain it.

"The idols are made of natural clay. The process consists of many stages from beginning to the completion of the final touch up."

"Initially a load of natural clay is taken from the nearest place where the natural clay is available abundantly. Every year we bring the clay from Heggarane, Sirsi, a village in Uttar Kannada district."
A load of Natural Clay
"Using this clay directly we can't use it for making the idols as it will be hard in nature. So, we need to blend it properly by mixing Natural clay with a proper amount of water to form Dough."
Properly blended natural clay
"Using this blended clay, we start making the idols by giving the required shape appropriately. For this some time we use some amount of coir (coconut shell hair). These coir is used for the wet inner portion of the idol to make the structure study and more stable ( we can see those coir in below images). As the clay is quite wet in nature the possibility of break-down is more, so some sticks are also used as a support to them. This sticks are removed once the idol get dried/hardened."
Start making the idol
"Once the idol get hardened, we need to do finishing by using a small amount of oil and the proper equipment. This results to a smooth and shiny surface to the idols. This finishing helps to remove all the humps and bumps to get a well finished surface."
Well finished idols
"After that we roughen the surface a bit by rubbing the well finished idol surface using a wet cloth. This helps the surface of the idol to absorb the colors while painting."
Roughened idols ready for painting

"Painting the idols is initiated by applying the cement primer to them. After that 2-3 layers of fiber-color paints are applied as required, followed by shading and other processes of painting"

Under processing painting

"Finally we give the final touch-up by painting the eyes, hair and placing tilak on the forehead. Now the idol is ready for festival/pooja."

Final touched-up idols
"All these process takes around two to three months of day to night work. This will be the daily routine in the month from June to August. " Suresh Bhandari said.

Bhandari Brothers, Karki: The Idol Makers

Karki is a village in Honnavar Taluk in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka stateIndia. It is famous for its cool climate and culture. It is also famous for a manufacturing Lord Ganesh Murtis, for Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

A family in Karki manufactures Ganapati-idols during the season of june to august for Ganesh-Chaturti festival. The family which does this is Bhandari-brothers family. This family is aggressively promoting environment-friendly clay or shadu idols.

Lord Ganesha idols from Karki Bhandari Brothers
After the month June  anybody visiting  Bhandari’s houses  in this little  town Karki , has to  pass through narrow passages between the Ganesha idols . Most of the family members  are busy with  Ganesha idol making  activities. Ramachndra Bhandari and his three brothers prepare these idols for clients from Karnataka, Uttar Kannada and other cities, and want to start an institute soon to promote the making of such idols.
Keshav Bhandari and his two brothers, Prabhakar and Sathyanaraya, started making clay murtis in the 1980s, at Karki,Uttar Kannada; today, with Karki emerging as a crucial node of Uttar Kannada, Karnataka, the children are continuing that tradition.

Bhandari brothers make around 250 to 300 idols per year. They don't do extra idols. All the idols are ordered in advance. Orders start from the month of june to even ten days before the festival. People come with different kind of request, photos etc. for order.

Initially they started making the idols for only  neighboring  houses, relatives and friends  but  now they are making these idols for public places as well. The size of the idols varies from a feet to six feet tall.
Lord Ganesha idols of clay, from Karki Bhandaris
“Earlier, artisans mostly made clay idols. We have retained that culture and would like to popularise it. These days, most idols are made of plaster of paris because idol-making has been transformed from an art into a profit-making enterprise,” Suresh Bhandari said.
The biggest idol Ramachandra has created this year is six feet tall, for a mandal in Honavar. He has used 10 kg of shadu clay for it, and half a kg of coir (coconut shell hair). He says he uses coir on the wet inner portion of an idol to make the structure sturdy.
These idols look cool once all the works associated with them is finished. But there are a lot of processes that have to be done before giving the final model. Please have a look at this link to see the Process involved in Making Lord Ganesha Idol using Clay
These are some of the snaps of the idols that the family made last year. Hope this will continue in future also. Artists are always encouraged  when their art bought for a good value. Felicitating an artist do  encourage but buying their art will encourage them more and demand more  contribution from them.
